About Prolapsed Uterus

Uterine prolapse occurs when pelvic floor muscles and ligaments stretch and weaken, providing inadequate support for the uterus. The uterus then slips down into or protrudes out of the vagina.

Uterine prolapse can happen to women of any age, but it often affects postmenopausal women who've had one or more vaginal deliveries. This can lead to ulcers, cancer and an unpleasant body odour that often causes a woman to be ostracized from her community. (Source: Mayo Clinic)

In Ethiopia, Dr. Mark Karnes and the OB team at Soddo Christian Hospital are able to treat advanced uterine prolapse with surgery. Sponsoring a woman's surgery only costs $350 and changes her life forever.

One woman's story...

Shelley met this woman who was awaiting her surgery in 2015. She is the mother of six children and was widowed 12 years earlier. She thinks her uterus prolapsed 10 years previously while she was digging in her garden. The offensive body odour caused by the prolapse made her unwelcome by neighbours and the community. It is heartbreaking to think how a medical problem made her an outcast.

Shelley asked her how it would be for her when she returned home after her surgery. She said, "I will forgive them." This woman was lifting her arms toward heaven and praising God for the gift we gave her. We have been so touched by her grace and strength.
